Briefd ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This
Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your
rights regarding that information.
1. Information We Collect
We collect the following data to provide and improve our service:
- Account information: your name and email address, provided during sign-up.
- Reading behavior: which stories you open, how long you read, and which stories you save or share. This data powers your personalized briefing.
- Category preferences: the topics you select during onboarding and update in settings.
- Professional context: optional role, industry, and company information you provide to improve briefing relevance.
- Device information: device type and OS version, used solely for compatibility and crash reporting.
2. How We Use Your Data
- Personalization: your reading behavior and category preferences are used to curate your daily briefing and rank stories by relevance.
- Briefing curation: we combine your interest signals with editorial quality scoring to select 15-25 stories each day.
- Explain This: when you use the Explain This feature, your query is processed to retrieve relevant sources and generate a grounded explanation.
- Service improvement: aggregated, anonymized usage patterns help us improve the product for all users.
3. Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services to operate Briefd:
- Clerk: handles authentication and account management. Clerk processes your email address and authentication credentials. See Clerk's privacy policy.
- Anthropic Claude: powers AI features including story summarization, briefing curation, and the Explain This feature. Query content is sent to Anthropic's API for processing. See Anthropic's privacy policy.
- Brave Search: used to retrieve source material for the Explain This feature. Search queries are sent to Brave's API. See Brave's privacy policy.
- RevenueCat: manages subscription billing. Purchase data is processed through your app store (Apple or Google). See RevenueCat's privacy policy.
- Mixpanel: anonymized product analytics to understand feature usage. See Mixpanel's privacy policy.
4. Data Retention
- Behavioral signals (reads, taps, time-on-story) are processed nightly to update your interest profile.
- Raw behavioral signals are deleted after 30 days.
- Your computed interest profile is retained as long as your account is active.
- Account data is retained until you request deletion.
5. Data Security
We use industry-standard security measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS), secure authentication via Clerk, and access-controlled databases. We do not sell your personal information to third parties.
6. Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Delete your account: you can request full account deletion at any time from the app settings or by contacting us. This permanently removes all your data including your interest profile, reading history, and account information.
- Export your data: you can request a copy of all data we hold about you by contacting us at the address below.
- Modify your preferences: you can update your category preferences, professional context, and notification settings at any time in the app.
7. Children's Privacy
Briefd is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us and we will promptly delete it.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes through the app or by email. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
